22 October 2026 — At Sea: A Little Pampering, a Moment of Honor, and the Mediterranean
I woke at 6:00 this morning, ready for another day aboard Explorer of the Seas. Today the Mediterranean itself was the destination. No rushing ashore, no meeting point to find—just time to enjoy the ship and watch the world pass by.
By 7:00, I was down at the spa for an Aroma Seaweed Treatment. A warm seaweed mask, aromatic essential oils, a comforting wrap, and a half-body massage made for a very pleasant start. Whatever else was on the schedule, I was certainly beginning the day relaxed. Ritee followed that with my morning shave, and I emerged ready to face the day looking considerably more presentable.
At 8:30, I settled in for breakfast: eggs, bacon, and hash browns, with the Mediterranean providing the view. There is something wonderfully satisfying about sitting back over a familiar breakfast while an entire sea rolls past your window. I took my time and enjoyed it.
At 10:30, I attended the ship’s veterans ceremony. I have always appreciated these gatherings, which honor military veterans, first responders, and the families who stand beside them. After my own years in uniform, these moments carry a personal meaning. I think about the people I served with, the responsibilities we shared, and the families whose support made that service possible.
Travel brings people together from many places and walks of life. A ceremony like this gives us a moment to pause together and recognize service, sacrifice, and lives spent looking after others. I was glad to be there.
At noon, I headed to Izumi for a Japanese lunch. Its menu, crafted by Master Sushi Chef Travis Kamiyama, offers a change of pace with sushi, sashimi, and Japanese-inspired dishes. Among the noted favorites are the Spicy Crispy Tuna Roll and Tonkotsu Ramen. For me, it was another opportunity to slow down and enjoy a different part of life aboard the ship.

At 2:00, the afternoon took a French turn with the Moët & Chandon Champagne Tasting Experience. The tasting featured Brut Impérial, Rosé Brut, and Grand Vintage, along with a look at the history of Champagne and the differences between the wines. Three Champagnes and a day on the Mediterranean—my retirement schedule continues to have its advantages.

By 3:30, I was back in my room for some rest and a proper afternoon nap. I consider this an important part of the itinerary. A little quiet time gives me the energy to enjoy the evening, and I have learned to appreciate that balance.
At 7:45, I joined fellow travelers for dinner at Chops Grille. The restaurant has that classic steakhouse atmosphere that makes an evening feel like an occasion. Its menu ranges from hand-cut steaks to seafood, with familiar steakhouse sides, sauces, and desserts. Good food is always welcome, but sharing the table and conversation is what makes these dinners memorable.

At 10:00, I took an evening stroll around the ship. I enjoyed looking around and taking in the atmosphere after a full, thoroughly pleasant day. Even with so many places still ahead, I appreciate these hours when I can simply enjoy where I am.

Then it was back to my room to begin preparing for tomorrow’s visit to Split, Croatia. A new port, new sights, and another opportunity to bring home photographs and stories. That should be an awful lot of fun.
