Desert Shield/Desert Storm 30th Anniversary Thoughts and Memories

Updated: Apr 2, 2021

One has few special moments in life. Birth, first day of school, driving a car, graduating from high school and college, marriage, and other life events. One of the biggest moments in my life was the time frame from 24 – 28 February 1991. Life has many moments, but this time period changed the course of my life.

General Schwarzkopf said, it was time to move out and Charlie Company 5th Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment cross the berm into Iraq, and we were part of history. Wow, I cannot believe it has been thirty years since the ground war stated. I truly cannot believe I was apart of history. It was a start of 100 hours in my young adult life, I will never forget.

I was very blessed to work with an outstanding group of brothers. All were special, but First Sergeant Fran Lopez, 1LT Paul Davis, 1Lt Lonnie Lawrence, 1LT Nick Lovelace, SFC Brunaugh, and PFC Davenport and Williams stick out in my memories.

Here is the 1st Infantry Division, 27 Feb 1991, I (CPT Joseph F. Thompson) was interview by 1st Infantry Division Pool reporters accompanied the U.S. Army First Infantry Division as they entered Iraq during the ground campaign of the Persian Gulf war. Scenes of the military vehicles moving around in the operation are shown, with interviews of members of the First Infantry Division on their experiences in the ground campaign.
