October 21, 2026 — Athens, Greece: Five Senses and a Million-Dollar Finish

October 21, 2026 — Athens, Greece. A day of Greek flavors, music, a little creativity, and just enough pampering to keep this traveler in good working order.
A Fresh Start with Ritee
I woke up at 7:00 a.m. feeling rested and refreshed, ready for a full day in Athens. By 7:45, I was down at the spa for a complete facial and shave with Ritee. As she worked, she told me about her life in Mumbai, India. Those conversations are part of what I enjoy about cruising: getting to know the people who help make these journeys special.
Ritee worked hard to get me ready for the warm Athens sunshine. By the time she finished at 9:00, I felt completely clean and refreshed. The face was ready. Now it was time to put the rest of me into motion.
10:00 a.m. — Five Senses of Athens
Today’s excursion was called “Five Senses of Athens,” and it offered a wonderful way to experience the city through its sights, sounds, tastes, textures, and aromas. We boarded an air-conditioned motor coach for a scenic drive past the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the Arch of Hadrian, the National Garden, and the Parliament Building, formerly the Old Royal Palace. Athens certainly knows how to put history along your route.
Coffee, a Mystery Box, and Zorba
Our first stop was Glykys Café for Greek coffee and Greek delight. There was also a mystery box to reach into and feel around for a surprise. Apparently, sightseeing alone was not enough; today we were putting all the senses to work.
Then we continued to Mitropoleos Square for Syrtaki dancing to the infectious music of “Zorba’s Dance.” There is something about that tune that makes it difficult to remain entirely still. After a career spent marching in formation, I appreciate a little movement where nobody is inspecting the alignment.
Beads, Ouzo, and Something Sweet
In Plaka, we headed to Filomousou Square for a komboloi-making workshop. These strings of beads are often called Greek worry beads. Making a set was a nice chance to slow down and work with my hands in the middle of a busy day.
Next came Vrettos distillery for a glass of ouzo, the traditional anise-flavored aperitif, accompanied by meze, or small appetizers. This was certainly a pleasant way to explore the taste portion of our five-senses adventure.
We finished at Oraia Ellas Café with refreshing homemade lemonade and a traditional spoon sweet: a spoonful of sweet preserves. A little sweetness, something cool to drink, and time to take in the atmosphere made a very enjoyable finish before returning to the ship.
4:30 p.m. — Back Aboard and Ready for a Nap
I arrived back aboard Explorer of the Seas at 4:30, cleaned up, and took a nap. It had been a long day out in Athens, with plenty of sunshine and activity. I enjoyed it, but I was more than ready for a rest. Even an enthusiastic traveler occasionally needs to recharge the batteries.
Hot Stones and a Million-Dollar Feeling
Later that evening, I returned to the spa, this time for hot stone therapy. The warm stones on my back and body helped me relax, and by the end I felt like a million dollars. After a full day in the Athens sun, that massage was very much appreciated. Ritee had started the day by refreshing my face; now the rest of me was finally catching up.
7:45 p.m. — Dinner with Friends at Izumi
Dinner was at Izumi with friends, a very pleasant way to round out the day. The restaurant’s Asian-inspired prix-fixe experience features an inventive menu of favorites crafted by Master Sushi Chef Travis Kamiyama.
The menu offers one small plate, with choices such as miso soup or pork gyoza dumplings, followed by two large plates from a selection of signature rolls, sushi and sashimi, ramen, and other dishes. Dessert rounds things out, with options including mochi ice cream in a variety of flavors. Plenty of possibilities for a good dinner and, even better, time around the table with friends.
One Last Stroll
At 10:00 p.m., I took a stroll around the ship before heading back to my room to rest and relax. By 11:30, I was ready for sleep.
Athens had given me a full and enjoyable day: history, Greek culture, local flavors, a little dancing, and a welcome opportunity to meet people along the way. Add a good massage and dinner with friends, and I would call that a very successful port day.
Tomorrow brings a day at sea. I’m looking forward to the activities, a little time to catch my breath, and whatever else the day has in store. The adventure continues!
Photographs from My Athens Adventure

Athens is such a beautiful city. Thinking of the history as I walk through it always gives me a sense of wonder.
Yes, Cats aplenty in Greece. They are so well mannered but know how to call your attention. The dancing must’ve been fun. Especially after a sampling of Ouzo. I just love how the days are so finely curated. Such a fine way to stimulate all the senses.
